September Fiesta Every September a fiesta is held in Santa Ponsa (Fiesta Rei en Jaume) to commemorate the Christian conquest of Mallorca by King Jaime in 1229 after over 300 years of Muslim domination. The cross at the Marina marks the place where King Jaime and his troups are said to have landed. The Fiesta goes on for over a week and included in the events is a re-enactment of the battle which begins with a procession of the Moors and Christians who parade from the cross to the main beach where battle commences. There are many other activities in the week prior to the battle including a medieval market and Parade of the Giants who come from many parts of Mallorca. The night of the battle is normally followed by a musical bonanza until the small hours either on the beach or on a stage at the pinewoods behind the beach. In the past, such big names as Lou Bega have appeared. The fiesta normally ends on the Sunday night with a magnificent firework display. The exact dates of this year’s Fiesta have not been announced at the time of going to press but in all likelihood, the firework display will be on 12 September. There is a Christian history walk that starts from The Marina and ends at the Tourist office. There are plaques along the route which tell you all about the Conquest. |
